How to Play Go Fish: Rules, Strategy, and Variations

Contents

Go Fish is a classic children’s card game where 2-5 players (ages 4+) compete to collect matching card ranks (“books”). Players take turns asking opponents for specific cards to complete sets of four, drawing from a central pile when unsuccessful. The winner collects the most completed books by game end.

What You Need

How to Play

  1. Deal cards:

    • 2-3 players: 7 cards each
    • 4-5 players: 5 cards each
Remaining cards form the fish pond face-down.
  2. Starting play:

    • Youngest player goes first; turns proceed clockwise.
  3. On your turn:
    a. Ask any player for a rank you already hold (e.g., “Emma, give me your 7s”).
    b. If they have the card(s), they hand them over. Take another turn.
    c. If they don’t, say “Go Fish!” and draw from the pond:

    • Draw the requested rank: show it and take another turn.
    • Draw another rank: end your turn.
  4. Completing books:
When you collect all four of a rank, show them face-up as a completed book.

  5. Running out of cards:

    • If your hand empties, draw 5 new cards (or fewer if the pond is low).
    • Game ends when all books are made or no cards remain.

A: Continue play without drawing until all books are made or hands are empty (Sources 1, 3).

Q: How are ties resolved?
A: Some rules award the win to the player with most books at first card-out (Source 3), while others require all books to be completed (Source 4).

Q: Can you play with Jokers?
A: Jokers are rarely used (Source 3 lists 52-54 cards), but house rules may allow them as wild cards.
