How to Play Rook: The Complete Guide to Rules and Strategy

Contents

Rook is a classic trick-taking card game for 4 players (2 teams of 2) ages 8+ that uses a specialized 41-card deck. Teams bid to name trump, then compete to capture valuable “counter” cards in tricks. The first team to reach 300 points wins. Below are the official rules with Kentucky West(ish) variations noted.

What You Need

How to Play

  1. Setup:
Shuffle the deck and deal all cards (9 to each player), placing 5 face-down as the “nest” in the center.

  2. Bidding (minimum 70 points):

    • Starting left of the dealer, players bid in increments of 5 points up to 120, passing if unwilling to bid higher
    • Highest bidder picks up the nest, discards any 5 cards (without showing), and names trump color
  3. Trick-Taking:

    • Left of dealer leads first
    • Players must follow suit if able; otherwise may play any card
    • Highest card of led suit wins unless trumped (then highest trump wins)
    • Rook Bird is highest trump (must play if no other trump when led)
  4. Scoring:

    • Counters captured: 5s (5 pts), 10s/14s (10 pts), Rook (20 pts)
    • Last trick winner takes nest’s counters
    • If bidders meet/exceed bid, add points; else subtract bid amount

How to Win

First team to reach 300 points wins. If both exceed 300 in same round, higher score wins. Kentucky West(ish) variation uses 500 points to win.
